Depression

What is depression?

Depression is a mental health disorder that affects how you think, feel, and act. When you have depression, you experience persistent sadness, worthlessness, and hopelessness that you can’t shake off.

The underlying cause of depression isn’t well understood, but your brain chemistry, hormone levels, and biology may contribute to your risk of developing it.

Without treatment, depression can worsen and interfere with your quality of life. Untreated depression can also increase your risk for self-harm or suicide.

People with depression can also have anxiety and other mental health issues. The Marcann Group can diagnose and treat depression and other conditions at the same time.

When should I seek treatment for depression?

Occasional depression symptoms can occur after a stressful event. However, if your depression persists for two weeks or more or if you’re unable to meet your responsibilities due to depressive symptoms, you should schedule a diagnostic evaluation at The Marcann Group.

In addition to feelings of worthlessness and hopelessness, symptoms of depression can include:

  • Irritability
  • Social isolation
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Loss of interest in activities
  • Difficulties concentrating
  • Persistent fatigue

If you’re thinking about suicide or causing yourself harm, seek immediate medical attention at the nearest hospital or call 911.

How is depression treated?

While depression symptoms can seem overwhelming, the condition is highly treatable. The Marcann Group team offers personalized treatment plans to reduce your symptoms and restore your quality of life.

After a comprehensive depression screening, the team may recommend:

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy, or talk therapy, helps you understand the negative thought patterns that may contribute to your depression. The team provides tools you can use to solve problems and better manage stress that contributes to depression.

Medications

Antidepressant medications increase chemicals in your brain to help you feel better. While it can take a few weeks to notice the full benefit of taking your medications, continuing to use them can provide effective relief of persistent sadness and hopelessness.

The team continues to monitor your medication use and can make adjustments as needed to ensure your therapy continues working well for you.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)

TMS is a noninvasive treatment for depression that uses pulses of magnetic energy to stimulate nerve cells in your brain. That stimulation helps activate regions of your brain that control your mood to relieve persistent depression symptoms.

The team may recommend TMS if other depression treatments aren’t working.
