Anxiety

What is anxiety?

Anxiety is a persistent feeling of fear or dread, even when the circumstances don’t call for it. Several types of anxiety can negatively affect your overall quality of life, such as:

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)

GAD causes constant and excessive worry about work, loved ones, health, or finances for no identifiable reason.

Social anxiety disorder

Social anxiety disorder causes excessive worry in social situations. The condition may cause you to avoid social events or spend a lot of time in isolation.

Panic disorder

A panic disorder causes sudden episodes of intense fear, even when there’s no danger. A panic attack can last for several minutes and be traumatic enough to cause anxiety about future attacks.

Phobia

A phobia is an intense fear of objects or situations. Common types of phobias include fear of animals, flying, or public speaking.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

While anxiety is your body’s natural response to stress, too much anxiety can affect your ability to meet responsibilities. You should schedule an anxiety evaluation at The Marcann Group if you have:

  • Anxious feelings
  • Persistent or intrusive thoughts
  • Rapid heart rate
  • Shortness of breath

You should also seek treatment if your anxiety is causing isolation or if it’s causing depression. Depression is a mental health condition that causes persistent feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness, and guilt and can sometimes occur with anxiety.

How is anxiety treated?

Your treatment plan for anxiety may start with lifestyle changes like reducing your caffeine intake, getting quality sleep every night, and exercising daily.

The Marcann Group team may also recommend treatments like:

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy, or talk therapy, gives you an opportunity to talk about your anxiety triggers in a safe and nonjudgmental space.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)

CBT is a type of psychotherapy that helps you recognize negative thinking patterns that trigger anxiety. You learn how to change your response to stressors that trigger anxiety, so you can enjoy a better quality of life.

Medications

If your anxiety symptoms persist even with therapy, you may be a candidate for medications that change the chemicals in your brain to reduce anxiety symptoms.

The team can meet with you in-office or virtually through an online platform to address your anxiety issues. They provide the resources and tools you need to cope with daily life, so you can learn to live without anxiety.
